Simple Summer Safety Tips for Pet Owners

Dehydration, heat stroke and burns are just a few of the hazards that can affect your pets over the summer months. With this in mind, here are four simple ways to prevent pet injuries this season.

Play it Safe

If you want complete peace of mind, schedule a check up at your local veterinary practice. This is a simple way to start the season knowing that your pet has a clean bill of health. This is a great opportunity to voice any concerns you may have with your vet and seek advice about summer safety.

Create a Shaded Area

Over the summer months, when temperatures rise, it is important that your pet can seek shade. While it doesn't make sense to keep your dog or cat cooped up inside when the sun is shining, it is essential that you monitor their exposure to the sun and look out for symptoms of dehydration. Knowing the signs of sunstroke can help you to act fast and seek help. If you like to spend time in the garden during the summer, create a shaded area by putting up a parasol and leave a bowl of water for your pet to avoid dehydration.

Get Grooming

A thick coat is not going to do your dog any favors on a hot day. Keeping your pet’s coat short can make sure that they are comfortable when the temperatures soar. Take your pet for a haircut but be wary of having his coat trimmed too short as this can lead to sunburn.

Invest in Identity Tags

There is no better way to enjoy a summer’s day with your pet than letting them run free in the countryside. However, if you are going to do this, it is wise to make sure that your pet has an identity tag. That way, if he or she does run off, you have peace of mind that someone can contact you if your pet gets lost. You can find a superb selection online somewhere like Collars and Tags. Have your name and contact details engraved on the tag to ensure that you are contactable in an emergency.

These are just a few of the ways you can look out for your pets in the summer. Ensuring your cat or dog doesn't suffer due to high temperatures is simple when you follow the tips above.

  1. I own a brachycephalic dog and cat, hahah... I like smashed faces! The dog is particularly bad. If it is over about 18ยบ C he can barely sit in direct sunlight. Great post, every year I'm shocked by what people will put there dogs through!!

  2. Great information! I live in the South and it gets very hot and humid. Shade and lots of water are so vital. My critters stay indoors, but even a short trip outside is very hard on them, especially the older ones.

  4. All my cats live indoors. I have a puppy that stays inside too, although he does get trimmed because he is a poodle. Now I have 2 Labs that live in the backyard and they stay cool by digging holes under the house. I have 2 sheds they can go in, but it gets so hot here in New Orleans that it gets too hot in shed too. I make sure they don't over heat.

  5. I get so angry when people get a pet and neglect it. I have seen animals chained up in the winter covered in snow with temperatures in the teens. If you want a pet, treat it like family!

  7. if your dogs must stay out in the summer heat buy a little childs pool so they can get wet. dogs with short noses, like boxers, have a hard time keeping cool.

  8. These down to earth rules are so easy to follow. I think that some people who have not had pets and are having one for the first time, sometimes do not know what is good or bad for the animal.

  13. Very good tips. For the summertime, I bought a kiddie pool a couple years ago and I keep it filled with water in a shady spot for the dogs to get in and cool off.

  14. These seem so obvious to pet owners that care, that are tuned in to their pet's needs. My dog needs grooming regularly, so often that I have to do it myself, I love doing it, even though I'm allergic, because I love being with my puppy one on one.

  15. Great article to remind people to think of their fur babies. Different than humans- they rely solely on their pet parents for care and forethought about their conditions.

  16. We always keep a bottle sprayer (filled with water) near our dogs' cage. We spray water on them several times during the day, and even at night. Oh how they love it! We also provide them with fresh, clean water. At noon, ice cubes we're being served to them. These are some simple things that many pet owners fail to do. It's really sad. :(
