How a Prenatal Paternity Test Works

The paternity of a child is of critical importance for many mothers and fathers. The sooner you can calm your doubts and fears and have a sure and accurate answer; the better. That’s why prenatal paternity test kits have recently risen in popularity. They provide an easy, cost effective and non-invasive method to determine paternity sooner rather than later. You may have some questions or doubts about the legitimacy or accuracy of a prenatal paternity kit, so this guide is designed to increase your knowledge and understanding about this popular method of determining paternity.

What Is It?

Unlike other paternity methods that require testing after a baby is born, such as the buccal swab method and the umbilical cord testing method, a prenatal paternity test can be configured while the mother is still pregnant. Often, tests can be configured as soon as five to nine weeks after conception has occurred.

Why Would I Need a Prenatal Paternity Test?

If there are some questions or concerns regarding the paternity of your unborn child, then it may be smart to consider purchasing a prenatal paternity home test kit to help you get the answers you need. While a home test kit may or may not be useable as evidence for legal actions, it can provide you with peace of mind and reassurance that you don’t currently have. You will have accurate knowledge as to the father of your child and can prepare for the birth accordingly. Knowing the paternity of your child will also help you fill out important paperwork after the birth of the baby, such as the birth certificate and a Voluntary Acknowledgement of Paternity form, if necessary.

How Does It Work?

There are currently two methods for prenatal paternity testing available, one being slightly more difficult than the other.  The first method that is slightly more difficult to obtain requires collection of fetal tissue cells. The less difficult and also less invasive method tests the fetal DNA that can be found in the mother’s bloodstream. This method is accurate and uses the latest DNA technology to find, preserve and analyze the DNA from the baby that is naturally found within the mother’s blood.

This less-difficult and non-invasive method can even be done with the assistance of an at-home kit and has been proven to reach 99.99999% accuracy at determining paternity. Many women have purchased kits and have been able to find peace of mind regarding the paternity of their child while still pregnant.

Are There Any Associated Risks?

As an expectant woman, it can be worrisome to have tests administered while pregnant. You may be worried about any potential risks to the baby or even to yourself. Most of the at-home versions of prenatal paternity testing don’t carry a large risk and are considered safe.

When the method of drawing sampling the bloodstream of the mother is used, there is no known risk to the unborn baby other than any imposed risk having blood drawn may cause a pregnant woman. If you use the method of acquiring fetal tissue cells it can be slightly more complicated and carry a slight risk of miscarriage.

How Long Will The Results Take?

With the advanced technology now available in DNA testing, results are available much sooner than ever before. If you purchase a kit for use at home and complete the easy-to-follow instructions, then you can mail in your sample to a lab. Once the lab has received your sample, it can often have it processed with accurate results available in as little as five business days.

How Accurate Is It?

Prenatal paternity testing is over 99.99% accurate at predicting the father of the unborn child. If you are pregnant and don’t want to wait until the birth of the child to determine the paternity, then you may want to consider an at-home test that is non-invasive, confidential and can bring you peace of mind throughout the rest of your pregnancy.

There are many reasons that a pregnant woman may decide to seek out a prenatal paternity test, including to prepare to file a paternity suit for child support and other legal responsibilities, as well as to gain important information for a complete and accurate medical history. One of the biggest reasons that women (and men) seek out a prenatal paternity kit is to have peace of mind for the next several months as they await the birth of the baby, with full knowledge as to the paternity.

  1. i feel that paternity tests are useless if the woman watches herself and doesn't put herself in the situation that she or her male partner would question the paternity.
